Florence and the Machine v Calvin Harris: Video Fight Club - Latest Hollywood Music News

Florence Welch has released Breath Of Life in time for the new Snow White and the Huntsman film, while DJ Calvin Harris and Ne-Yo have teamed up for Let's Go. But which one will win this week's Video Fight Club?

Story

What is stunning about the video for Breath Of Life isn't so much the story (there isn't one) but the clips from upcoming blockbuster Snow White and the Huntsman interspersed throughout the video, giving the strong impression that the film is going to deliver on many levels. Florence herself does appear in full popstar mode, singing in a studio with a choir behind her.
In Let's Go, three couples in Rio, Tokyo and Los Angeles take a whirlwind day out through their home towns. Rio sees the couple take a bike ride along the sunny streets, in Tokyo the couple take part in a dance off before hitting a club, and in LA the couple train in a gym before hanging out with Ne-Yo at the end. Calvin himself does make a very brief appearance in the clip, as do various cans of Pepsi. Product placement, anyone?

Winner Round One: Calvin's romantic, fun and vibrant video wins the first round.

Song

Breath Of Life is typically Florence and the Machine in the sense that it is epic and soaring. But as it is for a film soundtrack, the choir backing vocals take the song to a new level of majestic. Flo's vocals are also on fine form as ever. As with her other offerings, the red-haired warbler takes on writing duties herself, giving the track an emotional touch.

Let's Go is the fourth track to be taken from Calvin's upcoming untitled third album, which is highly anticipated by his fans. It sounds very much like a Calvin Harris song - not a bad thing - however while Ne-Yo's voice is always lovely, it intrudes a bit on this track. Instead Calvin could have tried leaving Ne-Yo's voice out of the chorus leaving more music to dance to. It worked for We Found Love, after all.

Winner Round Two: Florence and the Machine's epic and beautiful Breath Of Life is a perfect fit for Snow White and the Huntsman, so it wins.

Lyrics

Florence sings: 'I was looking for a breath of life/For a little touch of heavenly light/But all the choirs in my head say, no oh oh.../To get a dream of life again/A little vision of the start of the end/But all the choirs in my head say, no oh oh...'

Ne-Yo sings: 'Let’s go/Make no excuses now I’m talking here and now, I’m talking here and now/Let’s go/Your time is running out I’m talking here and now, I’m talking here and now/It’s not about what you’ve done it’s about what you doing/It’s all about where you going no matter where you’ve been/Let’s go!'

Winner Round Three: Florence and the Machine's ethereal lyrics trump Ne-Yo's sing-along lines.

Overall winner: Florence and the Machine beat Calvin Harris two rounds to one.
