The outlet further claimed that Somerhalder may end up joining the cast of The Originals after The Vampire Diaries. Julie Plec said that some of the TVD characters could crossover with The Originals every now and then. Zap2It, however, predicted that Somerhalder may not be too keen on moving over to the spinoff after TVD.
They pointed out that the actor decided to leave the series long before they announced its cancellation, which could mean that he is ready to move on from playing Damon Salvatore.
Paul Wesley, on the other hand, might be interested in the crossover. After all his character, Stefan Salvatore has already had a crossover once.
Even without the Salvatore brothers, The CW president Mark Pedowitz believed that The Originals could “live very well on its own,” hinting that the series could be renewed for another season.
