'Short Circuit' Reboot To Feature Edgier, More Menacing Robot

Johnny 5 is alive again with recent announcements that the Short Circuit franchise is undergoing a reboot. Keep it programmed right here; ClevverMovies has the input.

According to the LA Times, Dimension Films is currently developing a new script for the classic 1980's comedy about an experimental military robot that develops human emotions and self-awareness after being struck by lightning. Tim Hill, of Hop,Alvin & the Chipmunks & Spongebob fame, will direct and write.

Hill's experience with family movies and his knowledge of modern technology makes him the perfect choice to recreate this classic story. Quote, "If you look at kids and how they adopt machinery, it's just getting tight and tighter...we're just becoming more connected to our machines. That's why I think this can say more about our relationship with technology than the original ever did."

When asked about the relationship between Johnny 5 and the animal-lover that he befriends, Hill states that he will reinvent that part with either a pre-teen or teenager cast in the role because it will make the film more family-friendly as well as add a wish-fulfillment element that was missed in the original film.

While Johnny 5 will retain the childlike qualities that made him so loveable in the first place, Hill plans to make the film slightly edgier and more dangerous and add more adult themes to the film so it will resonate with a war-conscious audience. He says, "You've got to find the balance between something fierce and something endearing. The original was cute. But no one was threatened by it. The thing that makes it so relevant is that we live in this age of robots, particularly when it comes to war."

Short Circuit is set for a 2013 release. So you heard it here. Are you ready for Johnny 5 to face more threatening situations? Do you think he'll retain the adorable Wall-E look he had in the original? Sound off in the comments below. I'm Tatiana Carrier for ClevverMovies. Thanks so much for watching.
