The kickoff of The Originals final season is just around the corner, and it's chock full of moments we've been dying to see since the Season 4 finale.
We'll see how Freya (Riley Voelkel) and Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) have been managing the supernatural community in the French Quarter. We'll see how Rebekah (Claire Holt), Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic) and Klaus (Joseph Morgan) have been dealing with their separation. But most importantly, we'll see Klaus' reunion with an old love of his, Caroline Forbes (Candice King).
To give us the scoop on Caroline's long-awaited crossover, we went straight to the source, creator and executive producer Julie Plec.
"I've always loved the very strange and layered dynamic between Klaus and Caroline. I mean, it has been vengeful, it has been destructive, it has been evil, it has been weirdly warm, and it showed a side of Klaus and his humanity that we never thought he had," Plec said. "I certainly would never tell you where we're going to go with Klaus and Caroline because somebody would kill me or I would maim myself for spoiling it, but it is a nice relationship that they have after all these years because Caroline is one of the few people outside of Klaus' family that can actually speak a straight truth to him, and he needs that. It is a friendship of honesty and a little bit of antagonism and some pretty good advice."
In the Season 5 premiere, Caroline will use that advice as an attempt to knock some much needed sense into Klaus where his daughter is concerned. Even after five years apart (or wait, has it been 15... yikes, timelines are confusing for immortals) its safe to say the bond between these two characters is still very much there.

The question of the hour is whether that chemistry will translate into a romance this year. It's the final season, after all, which means happily ever afters are officially on the table.
"She's on the show for the final season for a number of episodes, and we have a bunch of scenes together," Joseph Morgan told TV Guide. "Not everyone is going to be satisfied because there's no way that we could ever satisfy everyone, I think, but I'm certainly satisfied with the ending that those characters have, and I hope it pays tribute to the investment that people have made in them."
There are definitely quite a few fans who have invested a lot in the couple over the years, that's for sure!

Unfortunately, if you're hoping for a dramatic, all-consuming love affair between this duo in Season 5, you might be one of the people Morgan expects will be disappointed. Plec hinted that while there is certainly a deep connection between Klaus and Caroline in Season 5, it's safer not to expect a passionate love story.
"Klaus has had very few loves in his life, and the feelings he had for Caroline have always lingered in the back of his mind," Plec said. "And of course anybody who's a fan of The Vampire Diaries knows that she lost her own husband and she's been through many rollercoasters in her life as well. I wouldn't say that these star-crossed lovers get to collide and live happily ever after - one, I wouldn't say that because I don't want to spoil anything - but two, I think that their relationship is more mature than that at this point. They've got a lot to learn from each other before we even see where that could go."
The Originals returns Wednesday, April 18 at 9/8c on The CW.
